Sipi Falls

Overview

About Sipi Falls

Nestled in the cool foothills of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda's Kapchorwa district, Sipi Falls represents one of East Africa's most captivating natural destinations. This dramatic landscape features three breathtaking waterfalls plunging 100, 85, and 65 meters into crystalline pools, surrounded by verdant coffee plantations, lush highlands, and welcoming Sabiny and Bagishu communities.

Just 277 kilometers from Kampala, Sipi Falls offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility—a place where adrenaline-seekers can abseil down thundering cascades, nature lovers can trek through mist-shrouded trails, photography enthusiasts can capture extraordinary vistas, and travelers seeking rejuvenation can find peace amidst unspoiled beauty. Whether you're drawn by the promise of adventure, the allure of pristine wilderness, or simply the desire to reconnect with nature, Sipi Falls delivers an experience that lingers long after you depart.

Know Before You Go: The Allure of Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls comprises three main waterfalls with heights of 100 meters, 85 meters, and 65 meters respectively. The name "Sipi" originates from the local 'sep' plant, a wild banana-like plant with medicinal properties that grows along the riverbanks.

The area is home primarily to the Sebei people, known for their rich cultural heritage and friendly hospitality. You'll recognize them by their 'Che' names—Chebet (born during daytime), Cheptegei (born on the veranda), and Chelangat (born at night). The Sebei people have inhabited these fertile slopes for generations, perfecting the art of growing world-class Arabica coffee while maintaining their unique traditions and way of life.

Travel Tips

  • Always hike with a local guide—trails can be confusing and guides provide valuable cultural context.

  • Support the local economy by hiring guides through the Sipi Tour Guides Association or your lodge.

  • Pack hiking shoes, rain jacket, insect repellent, and warm clothing—the weather can change quickly and nights get chilly.

  • Start hikes early to avoid afternoon rains and enjoy morning sunshine when the landscape is at its most beautiful.
