Rwanda's Testament to Conservation

Nestled in the misty hills of Rwanda's western province, Gishwati Mukura National Park stands as one of Africa's most compelling conservation success stories. Officially gazetted in 2015, this remarkable protected area combines two distinct forest fragments—Gishwati and Mukura—spanning approximately 34 square kilometers of lush montane and bamboo rainforest. The history of Gishwati Mukura is both sobering and inspiring. During the 1994 Rwandan genocide and its aftermath, the Gishwati Forest was reduced to less than 6% of its original expanse, devastated by illegal logging, cattle ranching, and settlement. What once covered 250,000 hectares had shrunk to a mere 1,500 hectares by 2007. However, through the determined efforts of the Rwandan government, conservation organizations, and local communities, an ambitious reforestation program began transforming the landscape.
