Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in southwestern Uganda, on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. This ancient rainforest, dating back over 25,000 years, is one of Africa's most biologically diverse ecosystems. Mist-covered hillsides are draped in a dense, "impenetrable" tangle of vegetation, sheltering an incredible array of flora and fauna. But the park's most famous residents are the endangered mountain gorillas, with Bwindi being home to almost half of the world's remaining population.

  The Premier Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience

  Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is consistently ranked as one of the world's top wildlife experiences. The park protects a precious population of over 600 mountain gorillas. Of these, 25 families have been habituated, allowing visitors to spend a magical hour in their presence.

  • The Trek: The adventure begins early morning with a briefing. Treks can last from a few hours to a full day, leading you through steep, lush valleys and dense foliage. The effort is rewarded with an unforgettable 60 minutes observing a gorilla family feed, play, and interact in their natural habitat.

  • Trekking Sectors: Trekking originates from four main trailheads:

  • • Buhoma (Northwest): 7 habituated groups with families such as Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe.

    • Ruhija (East): 4 habituated groups with families like Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza and Kyaguliro which is mainly for reseach.

    • • Nkuringo  (South): 4 habituated groups with families Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas, Posho

      • Rushaga (South):  10 habituated groups with families Nshongi, Kahungye, Bweza, Busingye, Mishaya, Mucunguzi, Kutu, Rwigi, Tindatine, Bikingi.

    • Gorilla Permits: A strict maximum of 8 permits per group are issued daily. Permits cost $800 per person and must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).For the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where visitors spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated group, only 4 permits are issued per group per day. This limitation is a crucial conservation measure designed to minimize stress and behavioral disturbance to the gorillas, protect them from human diseases, and ensure a sustainable, high-quality visitor experience. Visitors must be aged 15 or over.

    Historical Note: The Mubare gorilla group in Buhoma was the first to be habituated for tourism in Uganda back in April 1993, pioneering this transformative ecotourism model.

      When to Visit

      Bwindi can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June-August and December-February) offer easier trekking conditions with less rain. The wet seasons (March-May and September-November) are cooler, with lush, photogenic vegetation.

      Climate & What to Pack

      The forest is often cold, especially mornings and evenings. Average temperatures range from 7°C to 20°C (45°F to 68°F). The park receives up to 2,390 mm of rain annually.

        Each of the four trailheads offers a range of lodging, from luxury lodges and mid-range hotels to budget-friendly campsites. You can also stay in nearby towns like Kabale, Kisoro, or at Lake Bunyonyi.

        Conservation & Community

        Twenty percent of all park fees are shared with local communities living near the park boundaries. This revenue-sharing model ensures that local people benefit directly from conservation sustainability and ecotourism, fostering support for protecting the mountain gorillas and their forest home.
